Sort of... the issues comes from a situation where I was/am backing up an
Oracle database via RMAN... when I went to restore it, I got the following
errors in my daemon.log:
10/15/02 11:38:58 PM nsrd: media notice: Volume "DEV543" on device
"rd=icwpss20:/dev/rmt/0cbn": Cannot decode block. Verify the de
vice configuration. Tape positioning by record is disabled.
10/15/02 11:38:58 PM nsrd: media info: can not read record 1556 of file 17
on 8mm AIT-2 tape DEV543
10/15/02 11:38:58 PM nsrd: media warning: rd=icwpss20:/dev/rmt/0cbn reading:
I/O error
This happened on 2 different tapes from the same backup session and the
errors caused the devices to be disabled... needless to say, I found myself
in the fire trying to explain why this happened and what I could do to
prevent it from happening further.

Hi Daniel
The best way (IMHO) to ensure that a NetWorker saveset is readable is to
clone it; this reads the entire saveset, and also makes an additional copy
for offsite storage - two birds with one stone!
NetWorker does an abbreviated comparison when a volume is filled.
The problem with comparing a backup saveset to its data source is that the
data source has probably changed since the time of backup. So the
comparison will 'fail', not because of a backup problem, but because the
source and the backup are no longer the same.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [Networker] Media verification and backup verification
Is there a way in Networker to verify that a backup to a tape was good and
that there was no corruption on the datafiles and of the media? I know it
may be a newbie question, but I did not find an answer to this in my
manuals.
Thanks!
