Roman,

You are right, NDMP on Celerra is a real pain to set up. We have been backing
up 4 datamovers for the past year and we could tell you some real nightmare
stories.
Our envrionment has an HPUX 11.0 Legato server controlling an ATL P1000 with
the 4
drives connected via SCSI to the datamovers as NDMP devices. The jukebox is
configured
as a SCSI attached jukebox. Currently I am in the process of migrating to a
Storage Tek
SILO.

Here is a few gotchas to look out for:

1. 10,000 file limit on command line recovers. If you try to recover more than
this without a
     saveset recovery it will fail. The only options are save set recovery or
split up your backups.

2. No redirected recoveries. You HAVE to recover to the same filesystem which
is
     a real pain for live NFS filesystems, much easier if you use checkpoint
snapshots.

3. Incrementals do not work, period!! My workaround is to increase the levels
during the
     week, i.e. level 2 on saturday, 3,4,5,6,7 during the week. Basically
the same thing
     as an incremental.

4. Saveset command line recovers need the double colon between hostname and
filesystem:
                  nsrndmp_recover -c datamover0X -m datamover0X::/fsname -S SSID

5. NDMP backup aborts for some files that change in size frequently during
backup (we have had
     this bug in EMC engineering for almost 9 months now).

The command we use to backup the datamovers are: nsrndmp_save -T dump
       with the following parameters:            HIST=y
                                                              UPDATE=y
                                                              JB='tape device
file on datamover`
                                                              DIRECT=y
                                                              EXTRACT_ACL=T

Also make sure you set the parameters in the param file on the celerra. They
are located in the
/nas/server/slot_#/ directory. It seems like the datamovers can only handle
4 tape drives per
datamover and maybe only 2 per SCSI bus.

Good luck........

Donovan
