Agree. If you tell mmrecov the bootstrap identifier and the file and record
numbers - i.e. do not default the file and record numbers - it is pretty
fast. Ours takes about 10 mins max. using DLT4000.

If you default the file and record numbers then it will have to read every
record on the tape, which will take a long time, although 4 - 6 hours does
seem excessive.

As LTO holds so much more data than DLT, I am wondering whether the file and
record numbers are not being supplied so, if you are unlucky and the
bootstrap is near the end of the tape, there will be a lot more stuff to
read through. We have a tape pool for bootstrap only. As we change the tapes
each day, the only thing on the tape from the bootstrap pool is the
bootstraps for that day. That would make the search - if it had to be done -
much quicker than if the bootstrap was mixed with other data.
