If you don't want to mess around with macports, you can get Xcode from 
the App store (free), then install the Command Line Tools and then just 
do a normal ./configure --enable-client-only && make && sudo make 
install.  Worked for me on 10.7, at least, I haven't yet upgraded to 10.8.

This won't give you a .dpkg, however.  I haven't done much trying to 
update Lorenz Schori's Makefile in platforms/osx which does, but I think 
that last worked only up to 10.6.
