Hi Michael,
in our installation we used VMWare DataRecovery VM. This is to some extent included in VMWARE licensing (I am expert in that). In this way VMs are backed up (with snapshot, if necessary) in a disk repository (wich can be a SAMBA share of bacula SD server) that is periodically saved on tape by bacula.
DataRecovery backup uses deduplication and incremental backup, so data saved on tape is quite optimized.

Obviously if you need to recover somthing from the tape you need to restore the DataRecovery volume and then your VM (or a fingle file in your VM).

Oggetto:        [Bacula-users] Backing up vmware-based virtual machines using Bacula

Hi everyone,

I have another question about Bacula. This time it’s regarding a vmware environment. I would like to have Bacula backup some VM’s that I have on ESX machines. I know this is typically done (with other backup software such as BackupExec) via snapshots. You would set up a service account in Active Directory called “BackupExec” and configure BackupExec to create a snapshot of a given server and then copy that snapshot to tape.  My question is: Is there a way to do this in Bacula?

Thanks!

Regards,
Michael
