You could try restoring /etc/shadow to a local disk and then run John 
the Ripper on it...

Another method involves editing the restored shadow file to remove the 
root password, backing it up and then restoring to the NAS.

Bacula isn't just for backups and IDS. It can be a useful breakin tool too.
