Correct, but with monthly fulls you should set the time to 90-100 days.

yes.

When the volume carrying the oldest full backup expires, the subsequent 
diffs/incrementals are useless but leaving them in place won't hurt.

If you prune them all out immediately there's a possibility that the 
temporary increase in available volumes may result in you not spotting a 
need for more tapes/disk space as overall usage creeps up, until you 
need the things urgently. (It's a lot easier to purge a couple of 
volumes close to expiry than to have to hold up backups while waiting 
for more LTO5s to be delivered.)
