Thanks for the tip but unfortunately it didn't change anything when it comes to 
speed. I ran "sudo mysqlcheck -Aaov" and got among apparently normal messages 
the following surfaced:

note     : The storage engine for the table doesn't support optimize

Does this mean that nothing has been optimised?
