Thanks for the hint. I've found my mistake.

Although I installed the VM with the option not to encrypt home 
directories, the package ecryptfs-utils was installed and armed and 
therefore /home/xxx was some kind of unencrypted but mounted directory.

Removing the ecrypt utils did the job of showing the real home directories.
