Sorry, tonight I don't have time to read and digest all that.  I read 
the first couple and skipped into the end.  The last post was good in 
that it mentioned not mixing retention periods within a Pool.

If you don't mix retention times within a volume, and don't use 
'Assuming one job per volumes...', I still think it works.

The reason it does not work for your situation is because volumes do not 
grow to their max size.  To sum up: whether or not said simple strategy 
works depends upon the restrictions you wish to impose upon the system.
