That's an interesting approach. 

About 18 months ago, we decided to sponsor development of "real barcode
support" -- e.g., stripping the barcode column and referencing the tape
by its readable barcode.

It got bogged down by the idea of full "media catalog" feature creep.
Also, I'm still pretty mad about the whole counting-slots-from-zero
thing.(1) 

I'm also surprised to hear that OpenBSD's chio(8) / mt(4) doesn't track
tape source slots.   ~BAS
