I use putty.
On my FreeBSD 7 where is installed bacula-dir and sd:
<10:16>[labo:~]# locale
LANG=
LC_CTYPE="C"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_ALL=
In bconsole:
$ ls
Mes données/
héhé lol.txt
$

Can you copy and paste the filename using the mouse (putty or gpm or whatever)?
Do you have all the correct locale's set?
