Dear Bacula users,

I'm looking for an advice for my backup setup. The basic question is if I
should use the recycle feature or not.

Basically the setup is as follows:

1. The storage daemon writes to file volumes named <hostname>(full|incr)xxxx
into a directory /somewhat/backups
2. These files are periodically copied to another directory on a different
machine
3. The file on the different machine are periodically copied to tape and then
being archived in some basement

Never ever a tape is being reused.

What is causing me headaches is:

1. Let's say volume recycling is turned on.
2. A backup job writes data of a file called "backmeup.txt" to a volume file
called say host1_full0001 on day X
3. The volume host1_full0001 is copied to another disk and to tape later on.
4. After some time the file host1_full0001 is being recycled on "backmeup.txt"
is overwritten with a new version
5. A user calls me that he/she needs a backup of "backmeup.txt" from day X
6. But the version of "backmeup.txt" from day X is no longer contained in
host1_full0001 because it has been recycled; though the old version of
host1_full0001 is still on the other machine and on tape

So, how could I restore this file "backmeup.txt"? I think i would have to
manually scan the old version of host1_full0001, right?

Wouldn't it be better to not recycle volumes in this case and just create new
volumes everytime Bacula needs one and then delete old volumes after they have
been written to the other machine and on tape?

Best regards
Sven Hendriks
