Sendmail or postfix also needs to be installed.

If one or the other is, then you'll want to check the system logs, I'm 
not familiar enough with Debian, you could probably find them in the 
/var/log or /var/log/mail.

In my Mandriva setup it shows up at /var/log/mail/info.log
