my syntax in the command line restore was off, forgot to add the pipe. it was 
more like this 
 /usr/local/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_tarCreate -h nynastl.ad.hugeinc.com -n -1 -s 
'/nynastl/shares' / | tar -xvf /mnt/restore
