Hi,
above all I would like to apologize on the point that has been marked as a
incorrect way to post... I totally agree with Holger (I was scared to have lost
all my data... so I looking for an emergency help, sorry).

I realized that I was on a Red Hat system (Fedora 11) with Selinux enabled...
as the $Topdir and all it's content was on a different system the Selinux
context was incorrect, to fix it is necessary to issue the following command:
# restorecon -R -v ''$Topdir"
that solved the "Error: Backup number for host .... does not exist"
