I am having a strange problem in that I cannot seem to backup computers (using samba protocol) on a different subnet if the client has XP Firewall turned on.  I have no issues with backing up machines in the local network (i.e. the same network the backuppc/samba server sits).  I have WINS enabled so there is no issue actually finding the machine through the network, it just doesn't backup.

The specific errors I receive when trying to backup across a subnet when XP Firewall is turned on are as follows:

Running: /usr/local/samba3/bin/smbclient \\\\client\\C\$ -U backuppc -E -N -d 1 -c tarmode\ full -Tc - Documents\ and\ Settings/test/Application\ Data Documents\ and\ Settings/test/Desktop Documents\ and\ Settings/test/Favorites Documents\ and\ Settings/test/Local\ Settings Documents\ and\ Settings/test/My\ Documents myBackup
full backup started for share C$
Xfer PIDs are now 2476,2475
timeout connecting to 129.24.145.163:445

Error connecting to 129.24.145.163 (Operation already in progress)
Connection to client failed

Connection to client failed
tarExtract: Done: 0 errors, 0 filesExist, 0 sizeExist, 0 sizeExistComp, 0 filesTotal, 0 sizeTotal
Got fatal error during xfer (No files dumped for share C$)
Backup aborted (No files dumped for share C$)

I have tried connecting via smbclient using the command line and essentially get similar errors when the firewall is turned on.

Anyone have this experience and know how to resolve it?  Instinctively I would think to add the 445 and 139 TCP ports to windows firewall, but when I try to do that, it tells me the ports are already there..??  Very strange because I do not see those ports or Samba anywhere in the exceptions list.

I am not interested in moving to an rsync solution at this time- I know that would probably resolve some problems, but I need to stick with samba for now.  All other samba functionality works fine across subnets, as far as I can tell.

Thanks in advance!
Renee
