you would get faster performance if you formatted the drive ext3 and then installed the ext3 filesystem driver for windows.  fuse is is pretty slow and is terrible with I/O speed while ext3 is descent.  the ext3 driver for windows is a native filesystem pluggin so it runs just like ntfs(though a bit less optimized).

I haven't used the Studio model, but I use the USB 2 interface with CentOS
5 (an RHEL 5 re-spin). To allow cross-OS compatibility and large file
support, I convert them to NTFS and mount them using the NTFS-3G FUSE
filesystem.
