Right. I did:

chaffee.localdomain backup amdump
chaffee.localdomain root amindexd amidxtaped
--------------------------------------------------
and various permutations thereof on the client and the server. No go.
I also commented out server_args in the xinetd.d/amanda file. Also no
go.
