Didn't you say you had amanda working to backup the server.
In that case some should have had "-file -" instead of "-file /dev/null".

Sounds like things are failing before even the estimates are done.
Are you even connection to the client?  Are there debug files on
the client?  Does amcheck indicate you can connect?  runtar is called
from other programs and they write debug info to things like sendsize
and sendbackup.  Anything interesting there?
