Thank you. I will get all this info to the list. I think it might be my hard 
drive, as it's old and this is the holding disk.

But it worked when I first setup amanda.

Not from the info you gave.  We need much more info.
E.g.
- amanda.conf
- disklist
- log files ~amanda: log.2004xxxx.x and amdump.xx
- relevant debug files found on the client in /tmp/amanda/...
- Your network topology (is this a machine over a 14.4 baud serial modem
   doing a backup of 4 Gbyte?)  How fast is this machine? How large is
   the /var partition?
- Have you tried the tar command by hand (you find the exact tar command
   in one of the /tmp/amanda/*debug files).  Does it finish? How long
   does it take?

If this is too much for the list, you may send them to me, if you like.
