The pointers into the filesystem representing the files currently 
seeked position are private to tar.

So the best that you can do with amstatus is to see how many files are 
written, how many are left (and of course their sizes) plus the one 
currently being written.  But how much of that currently being 
written file has been written is hidden from us and amanda.
