Greetings. I'm still smarting from a large bullet wound in my foot, and I thought it might have some bearing on the problem with amcheck.

I installed Amanda by compiling from source on a linux box. I hadn't done this in a while, and I absent-mindedly made a directory:

        /tmp/amanda

on this system, copied the tar ball into it, unpacked, did the configure, make, make install, etc., all without any obvious problem.

But then I also observed the persistent symptom that amcheck of that system always failed. [...much pointless thrashing omitted...] It finally dawned on me that the directory that I had created, /tmp/amanda, belonged to root and could not be written by the amanda user. I simply renamed the directory, and all was fine after that.

                                        - Mike
