Verify Tape Integrity

Subject: Verify Tape Integrity

Is there any way to write data on the entire length of a tape and try to
read it back to verify that all that was written over the entire tape can be
read?  I like to compare it with a DOS scandisk, only for a tape instead of
a filesystem.
