Lucio:

Until all the tapes have been used at least once, Amanda had no idea of
which tape to use next. If you are going through new tapes for the first
time (redundant, huh), then Amanda is happy to take them in any order YOU
choose.

Once they have all been used, then Amanda knows which one is the oldest
(least recently used) and will ask for that one by preference (or ask for a
new tape and add that one to the list, as well).

Amanda manages the tapes by content, not by label name. The label name is
just a convenient way for you and Amanda to communicate which tape is going
to be used for an operation. There is no particular order for their use
within Amanda based on the label name. The order that Amanda cares about is
the date of last use and the number and levels of the backups on the tape.

You could have tape label names that have no logical sequence, but this
would still work for Amanda, since Amanda could ask for "Paul" as it was
older than "George", "John" and "Ringo". (Yes, I know the names date me. I
was born in the early 1950's, so there has been a LOT of water under that
bridge.)

Good luck and don't worry about the tape names until you've been through
them at least once.

Don

When I wrote the last message I forgot to specify the following:

This morning Amanda reported the last backup on Tape2, and then asked for "a

new tape" only, instead of "Tape3 or a new tape".
I put Tape3 in the unit anyway and amcheck stopped complaining for the wrong

tape. Amanda is going to use Tape3 for the next backup (which is just the
correct behavior).

This suggest me that amcheck DOES KNOW that Tape3 is the correct tape for
the
next run, BUT, for some reason, doesn't tell me.

BTW, it's Amanda 2.4.3 on RH9

What am I missing?
