I had the same problem. I considered these alternatives and choose DVD.
- older DLT tapes, e.g. 10GB are relatively cheap. I personally have so bad
experiences with DDS, that i would also prefer AIT-1 to some kind of
DDS.
- DVD+RW or DVD-RW drives.
They are not so nice to use with Amanda because they are not tapes.
I use a dvd+rw with Amandas file driver and then running a script to
burn a dvd.
