Encrypted Files on Tape

Hi,
is there any known method to encrypt the data, before writing it to
tape? I thought of something like "gpg -c" which does a symmetric
encryption, but if I do this then I won't be able to use amrecover any
more. Has anyone a good idea for this problem?
