I think, as Jon asked, that you need to post the **exact** message
you're seeing. It's very difficult to guess what's going on here.
You are correct that the selfcheck portion of amcheck that runs on the
client is *not* running as root (neither is amcheck except right at
the very beginning). So it could be something like what you've said,
but it's hard to know for sure.
