I am just starting to use this.  8.1 is good.  Do not use the earlier version, 
I think its 7.1.6, even if your SQL server is compatible, as there is a bug 
that causes the backup to be taken and then fail during post processing clean 
up.

I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible with 7.1.7.1 servers - IBM usually 
maintains a minimum of 2-levels backwards compatibility.  All of my TSM servers 
are 7.1.6.3 and many clients are 8.1.0.2.  We just put up
2-2016 SQL servers using the 8.1 TDP and no issues so far.
