I remember having to destroy some volumes because of tape read/write
errors. Is it possible I could have destroyed the only volume that had
this archive then TSM removed any reference to that archive?

How did you destroy them and were they primary pool volumes?
Following the correct procedure (and you have a good copy), you should not
loose data.
