I do not know this combination is suported or not, but we are using TSM Client 
6.1.3.1 and TDP for MSQL 5.5.X without any problems on a few servers.

i have to give more facts to our customer situation:

os is win 2008 r2 (x64)
sql server 2008 (production, no r2 version)

the only solution now will be to install tsm baclient 6.1.3 and tdp for sql
5.5.3.
as i mentioned before, i am very cautious to install something like this.
telling the truth, i never installed something like this in the past.
