We are using two different nodes for Windows servers with MS SQL databases -
one for normal TSM backups and additional for MS SQL backups via TDP for SQL
(for example, SERVER and SERVER_SQL).
TDP for SQL is not for archiving data for sure. Node SERVER_SQL keeps only
online backups for MS SQL database with quite short expiry period - from 2
weeks to 1 month only. Usually it is enough for our applications. We are using
node SERVER and normal ARCHIVE operation to make offline MS SQL database
archives (database is taken as set of files, which has read/write consistency,
because database is stopped). In this case, there is a possibility to keep
offline SQL database backups for any required period of time in month or years.
In addition, there is a possibility to keep in the same archive any other
files, related to applications, to be in sync with database.
In my opinion, this is the best way to have archives for databases.
Of course, it is possible to dump data into file and then archive dump file,
but this way is much less reliable.
