I don't know if it works, but it is not supported.
The most recent version of TDP for Oracle to backup 8.1.7 databases is (the no 
longer supported) TDP for Oracle 5.2.0

Hi list,

Can I use TDP for Oracle 5.5.x to backup Oracle 8.1.7 databases? The manual 
says that I can backup only Oracle 9i or superior......and I cannot find which 
version to use.....I´ve checked information center for previous versions but it 
shows only back to 5.3.....and it still says that Oracle version 9i is the 
oldest I can backup......
