Hi,
I have been playing with both a lot and this is what we have seen the last
couple of years.

One thing we sow was that Windows Server 2003 x64 had better performance then
Linux, but the major thing was becuase Linux some how had 1 min Start delay
that no one can explain why.
But my major benefit for Linux is that you don't have PnP in the same way as
Windows. Sometimes I see Windows switch the SCSI Host Bus ID of some reason. If
you are using QLogic HBA you can bind the ID much better then Emulex, and that
helps some times in Windows.

Another thing that is benefit for Windows is that NTFS is a much faster
filesystem to create Databases/Logfiles and Virtual Tapes. But that can also be
a problem so you get fragmentation. In RHEL and SLES do you only have support
for EXT3 (And much more) but if you can install any other OS I suggest you
install a Linux that have support for EXT4 so you get a much faster filesystem
so it is easy/fast to create new database/logs and virtual tapes.

Last but most important. use the operating system that you like and can
administrate best. If you are a UNIX geek then use Linux. If you feel more
comfterble with Windows to solve problems. Then choose Windows.

Best Regards
Christian Svensson

We are normally an AIX house for TSM, but the hardware decision has been
made for an implementation in a branch office.

I've used Windows TSM Server and am familiar with it. I've never used a
Linux TSM Server, but would prefer a unix-y TSM Server.

So knowledge and comfort aside, can anyone make some comments on stability
and reliability of TSM Server on either platform?
Tape Library is an IBM 3583 with LTO3 drives.

Regards,
Shawn
