Hello madunix,
TSM supports next ways to backup open files in Windows (depends on OS version):
1) Open File Support (OFM);
2) Logical Volume Snapshot Agent (LVSA);
3) Volume Shadow Copy (VSS);
4) Tivoli Data Protection for databases (to perform online database backups for
Oracle, MS SQL, Exchange, Lotus, etc).
OFM and LVSA are part of TSM Client and can be selected manually during
installation.
VSS is a part of Windows 2003/2008.
Actually it is enough to backup Windows image itself, not only service based
applications.
You should look for something similar for Linux.

Subject: [ADSM-L] Backup Online Files
Dear Experts,
Am running TSM backup software for an environment based (Open Source)
Oracle/MySQL/MAIL/Apache/DNS/Squid/AV/Postfix/Qmail with Linux
(operating system) 10xServers, In order to maintain the backed up data
integrity, the services on the server must be stopped (added another
risk of stopping and starting), because in case the services were
running, any open file related to that service will be reserved/owned
by that service and the backup software will not be able to back it
up.(integrity of the data that are not guaranteed)
In the TSM backup options, I have the following
1- Backup the file
2‐ Do not backup the file
3‐ Retry, and backup the file only if the file is no longer beingmodified.
4‐ Retry, and backup the file on the last attempt even if the file is
still being modified.
The services are or most of these services are 24/7/365 services which
means they cannot be stopped during back up, this constraint make it
impossible because stopping and starting these services wont be
acceptable in real world and as you know most of the used services
software does not have an online agent for them under TSM.
How did you people Backup open files in your environment by
guaranteeing the integrity of the data using TSM?
Thanks
madunix
