To re-establish confidence in the log (so that the client will start
using it again), I tend to stop the scheduler and do a manual
incremental with "-incrbydate".

Doing the two problematic filesystems (with 22M objects) in parallel,
and using incrybydate, I can get through the backup in about 3 hours.
Without journal or incrbydate, it takes about 15 hours.

Once backups on this system are stable, I'll be putting a "-nojournal"
on the Saturday backups, as is suggested by the TSM docs.

It sure would be nice if the Windows client got smarter. Configuring all
these expert-friendly options are OK, but it begins to feel like the
Monty Python Cheese Shop skit after a while.

I see some mention of a "scout" around 6.x. Maybe something better is
coming out. Following the trend, it will cost extra?

I still can believe TSM for Copy Services costs extra: We're just trying
to use a VSS provider that MicroSoft provides.

Grumble.

Bill,

A successful incremental backup is all that's required to re-engage the
journal engine - although given the nature of systems which tend to use
the Journal Based Backup feature in the first place, this isn't always
as quick or straightforward as one would like.

Dear all,

I have had problems with journaling, so I deleted the journal files,
installed the last supported client version for wk2 server 5.3.4.0.

I always believed that to resume journaling all I had to do was perform
an "incremental(complete)" backup NOT a "always backup".

However a colleague thinks a "always backup" (full) is required for the
journal to be up to date?

Is he correct?

TSM Server 5.4.2.0 Windows Environment.

Thanks

Bill
