I had exactly the same experience upgrading TSM from 5.3 to 5.5.0.0 on
AIX. So this problem of not doing an automatic upgradedb is agnostic,
and apparently happens on all platforms. Same resolution on AIX - I ran
dsmserv upgradedb from the command line, and then it was fine.

B.T.W. The crash we experienced a week after the upgrade has not
recurred. This was fortunate, because through our disaster drill in
January up to the present, 5.5.0.0 Server has been quite stable. (Unlike
some of the clients, but that's another discussion...)

Windows Services.
