Hello,
as Wanda and Ronald suggested, tapes will go in a private
status in the library inventory when TSM tries to use a tape
which has no internal label.

As already pointed out, this can happen when a tape is checked in
but not labelled. To avoid those situations, you can use the autolabel
feature in TSM. You can do it with the following command :
    update library <library name> autolabel=yes

The next time the TSM server encounters a tape with no internal
label, it will write one. You might find this feature useful.

Have a great day.

James,
It happened to me (and many others I know) that tapes became UA because
the label was not written to tape. That happens if you check-in tapes
without labelling them.
I am not saying that this is the cause of your problem or that it
happened to you , but I found it worthwhile to mention.
Search for ANR8355 if you are interested.

  Kind regards,
  RLL

(select volume_name from volumes) -
and libvolumes.volume_name not in -
(select volume_name from volhistory -

Tapes listed by the above query can be updated to SCRATCH status with an
UPDATE LIBVOL library_name vol_name STATUS=SCRATCH

I have done the first 4 steps already.. What I believe is happening is that
when some scratch tapes were put in TSM tried to use them, couldn't and
mark them as private.. Is there a command to check to see if this is
happening

First, get a reliable inventory of what tapes are in your library, perhaps
forcing the library to do an inventory beforehand. Do not use TSM for this.

Second, reconcile the hardware inventory against what TSM reports in "q
libvol" for this library, perhaps doing a TSM library audit beforehand.

Third, investigate the disparities. You unavailable tapes could be out of
the library or were made unavailable when TSM couldn't mount them because
of drive errors or whatever. If they are in the library and not damaged,
just update them to readwrite.

Fourth, review your reclamation policy and procedures.

Fifth, if you still are out of slots, upgrade your tape technology, get
another frame on your library, or eject tapes and start storing them
outside your library.

Hello Everyone,

I am having problem with no available slots in my 3584 library. I am
running tsm 5.3.2.5 and have 450 slots in the library. I also have over 50
unavailable tapes listed in TSM. I am struggling to figure out what to do
first. Does anyone have a suggestion to where I should start to solve this
problem.

Thank you in advance

James
