I'm willing to bet the "lipstick on a pig." came from "industry expert"
Curtis Preston, the poster boy for backups.  

Quite a while ago, at a TSM class, an employee, from whatever company he
was in at the time, was attending.  He kept on about how Curtis hates
TSM, but he has to have someone go to the class to deal with the market.
He is always talking about how TSM is lacking.  Unfortunately, he is
probably also the go-to expert for many journalists because of his
Oreilly book.
