Thanks to those who responded.  I learned on the VMware site that ESX
1.x and 2.x do not support connecting fiber attached tape drives to
the ESX server or to virtual machines.  Our 3494 is fiber-attached to
the SAN.  It is  not clear whether ESX 3.x will support it.  It
appears the direction of VMware is to not have a backup run from a VM
but rather that the 'consolidated backup' be run from a separate
physical proxy server that is attached to the SAN and to either
Virtual Center or the ESX servers. That proxy server is the one with
a connection to the library/tape drives.  Those who have tried to
attach tape drives directly to ESX using SCSI, not an HBA, say one of
the drawbacks is that any tape hiccups can force you to reboot your
ESX server. That is not something we want, to say the least.   Here
