Now, I haven't tried it yet - is the README lying to us?

No, they aren't, though this is only acknowledged in a one-line mention
in the README file for the 5.3.3 client.

I was REALLY frustrated by this, because as of Oxford, they'd thought it
was still going to be in the release.
