This has been discussed some from time to time.
Basically, as I remember, two conclusions.
1. Don't put ANY labels on tapes except the original barcode
labels. Anything else has the potential to jam tape drives or robot
mechanism.
2. I believe some folks have used some type of felt tip pen of various
colors (to stand out from color of LTO tape case) to make some markings
on the tape case.

Hello,
We have a disaster recovery test scheduled soon for IBM Sterling Forest,
NY site. We have been asked to add an additional sticker to all our LTO
1 and LTO2 tapes as a unique identifier for the disaster recovery
test(about 600 tapes) while at the DR test site besides the barcode label.
We will be using a 3584 Library - LTO 2 drives for the recovery test. I
talked to our library vendor, who suggested adding the labels to the top
of the lto 2 tapes, and that the additional label doesn't pose any problem
as long as it isn't a barcode type label and that the label of course is
stuck on correctly to the tape. I believe the identifier would be our DR
contract number(have to confirm that).
Wondering if anyone else has had to do this for a dr test, any issues,
recommendations?
TSM Version 5.2.3.5
Operating System - AIX 5.3 Mod 2
ADIC I2000 Library -LTO 2 drives
Thank You.
