I was able to reproduce that odd behavior...
On a TSM 5.2.3 client AIX system's node, I noticed that the GUID
would change
from null to a real GUID value and then back to null. This is on a
client
where the basic B/A client was installed (no GUID fileset was in
evidence, to
be installed along with it), and thus there is no /etc/tivoli/
directory, and
no 'tivguid' command present.
If I issued a simple dsmc command (e.g, 'dsmc q fi') from my non-root
account,
the GUID value would go null.  If I then issued the same command from
an sudo
session, the GUID value reappeared in a Query Node.
Looks like the GUID value can be fleeting.

If you have a 'tivguid' command present, you might try 'tivguid -Show'.
