Please research the mailing list archives (at
http://www.mail-archive.com/adsm-l AT vm.marist DOT edu/) before asking a
question; this one has been brought up several times.

There is a setting on the front panel of the IBM 3583 library that
allows you to see tapes as six chararacters (i.e., 000198L1)--this is
called "extended"--or the truncated version (000198) known as "normal".
(Keep in mind that once TSM thinks a tape has six characters, there
isn't any way to tell TSM that the same tape now has 8 characters.)

Check the menu on your ADIC library to see if there is a similar
parameter you can set.
