1) You install the 5.3 client on Monday.

2) Backup runs Monday night. New SYSTEM STATE and SYSTEM SERVICES file 
spaces are created. Old SYSTEM OBJECT file space is left intact.

3) You discover some problem that requires you restore back to last Friday 
-- before you installed the 5.3 client. You will need the 5.2 client to 
restore the SYSTEM OBJECT. If the 5.3 client upgrade had expired your 
older 5.2 SYSTEM OBJECT file space, you would be in a difficult situation.

This is why I said:
