Thanks...I realise its not the AIX - L, I only posted it here as I thought
it might have to do with the fact the this is the tsm server...as I have no
problems using the same external tape drive and tape somewhere else.

This isn't AIX-L, but...  I've seen that error where the operator kicks off
a mksysb and there is no tape in the drive. In your case, I would obviously
assure that the write-protect tab on the tape cartridge is in the right
position to allow writing. If still a problem, try another tape. If it
persists, then perhaps the drive is not properly sensing the tape. You might
also try 'lsof' to see if anything else is meddling with the drive.
