I prototyped something like this, but I can only offer you suggestions right
off the top of my head to get you started on research. The trick here is to
use the DSMC "expire" command and change the retention parameters for that
particular file; this is done by defining a special management class for this
file and pointing the client options file to reference that management class.
To issue the command, I built a VB 6.0 application that referenced Windows
Scripting (scrrun.dll) and builds a parameterized command-line instruction to
the DSMC executable in the background for the "expire" command.

So, this seems to be the safe way to "skin the cat" since you can't directly
delete from a backup: You "expire" it instead to get the same result.

Subject: TSM & SQL databases

I have a windows 2000 server with a SQL database. The database is backed up
using SQL's enterprise utility. Once the SQL backup is complete there is a need
to delete this backup file from the server to ensure there is adequate
database space prior to the next scheduled database backup. I'm currently
using a
different backup product that actually backs up the file and then deletes the
file from the server.

We are looking at moving this server to TSM, however from what I can see TSM
does not do any type of file deletion from the client. The other option would
be to
use TDP for SQL to manage the database backups, however there is additional
cost with that. Is there anyone using TSM to backup SQL databases and if
so how do you delete the files from the client once they are backed up??

AIX 5.2.3
TSM Version 5.2.3

WINDOWS 2000 SERVER
TSM 5.2.0.1
Service Pack Level 4.0
SQL Server 2000 Standard edition
Service Pack 3 for SQL
