Yes, this system has been running for many years. These boxes do nothing
else.

We monitor all kinds of resources through the usualy AIX tools as well as
BigBrother.

Nothing has changed, other than the usually mail processes of
adding/deleting mail, which is normal and has been going on for years.

Yes, spam is a big factor in mail quantity (we are currently testing and
will implement BrightMail for spam filtering) but we havently seen any
dramatic increases, lately. Nothing that would account for the problems
with TSM.

Also, as I mentioned, we have another IDENTICLE (same hardware, same
software levels, same network, same types of disk drives, etc) system that
has millions MORE mail files then this system, yet it backs up (same TSM
client) in 5+ hours LESS time then this system and doesn't have any TSM
backup problems !

Zoltan

I'd assume your mail server has been up for some time. Maybe there is
process other than the TSM client that has a memory leak and has consumed
available memory/swap. That's where I'd look next.

Not in this situation.

This is a Cyrus email system using imap. *ALL* user mailboxes are in
/var/spool/imap and /../imap2 and so on. These are permanent files.

The directory in the error message contains over 22K files.

To be honest, the files you appeared to be choking on were from
/var/spool. This directory generally contains only files that are
discarded once they are spooled to whatever destination they're headed
for. If you continue to have problems, I'd be inclined to add

        exclude /var/spool/.../*

to my dsm.sys file.
