I see there are many different viewpoints here about the best way of doing
this, so to make the whole concept a lot more confusing I will tell you how
we did exactly this.

I had the opportunity to test different ways of doing the move but I will
tell about the two quickest methods.

1) so long as your database volumes are flat files on JFS filesystems you
could simply copy the database and log files to exact equivalent directories
on the new machine, and then copy the dsmserv.dsk and dsmserv.opt files etc
to the exact same locations as well... This surprisingly works fine... BUT
and this is why I didn't do this in the real migration, I deliberately
corrupted some of the one of the db volumes and one of the log volumes and
TSM still started okay... it was only a bit later on (during testing) that
the corruption became apparent...

2) create your database and log volumes on the target node and do an unload
of the DB on the source server and copy the files to the new server. Then do
a reload using these files. Doing this will also check the integrity of the
DB going onto the new server. We experienced no issues doing this.

3) completely unrealistic on any large systems, but the only fully supported
way of doing it... Do a full export of the everything and re-import!

Your thought about upgrading in the process of the migration, as has already
been pointed out, is a definate no-no for integirty reasons. Do the
migration... check it out... then upgrade. At least any problems are easier
to isolate!

Cheers
