Patrick, this is nice for you!

If your boss is comfortable with it as well - he/she beeing 
sure you will not quit and
you will neither get ill nor do a holliday,
and that in the unexpected case something of the above would happen
the systems simply will keep working,
and that in the even more unexpected case the system would face a failure 
at such an inapropriate time this will not cause serious troubles for the
company,
then your´s company requirements are matched ;=8) 
and this is the right way to go.

I am more comfortable supporting something I built myself than relying
on technical support form a vendor. For example, 4 or 5 years ago a
technician came in to add a board (processor or RAM I think) to our J40.
After that the machine's NIC no longer worked. After numerous phones
calls to support and almost 36 hours later the problem was finally
resolved. Turns out the NIC defaulted back to the BNC connector instead
of the 10-BaseT connector.

Vendor support isn't all it is cracked up to be. I have other examples
as well.
